About Griffith Observatory
Griffith Observatory sits in a surrounding 3,015 acres park called Griffith Park, which was donated to the City of Los Angeles in 1896 by industrialist and philanthropist Griffith J. Griffith. Griffith donated funds to build a planetarium and observatory to make astronomy accessible to the public and in 1935 the original observatory opened to the public.
The Griffith Observatory was renovated in the early 2000s restoring the building’s Art Deco design elements and expanding the footprint of the building with an underground theatre, new exhibits, and a café. Visitors can look through telescopes, experience science, and astronomy exhibits and see educational planetarium shows. Don’t miss the large bronze statue of Albert Einstein! There are several events that are held at Griffith Observatory that are free to the public. Learn more here: http://griffithobservatory.org/
Admission to the Griffith Observatory is always free and planetarium shows are offered numerous times daily for a nominal fee. Parking fees are $4 per hour and public transportation is available to the Planetarium. The Observatory is open Tuesday to Friday between noon and 10 PM and between 10 AM and 10 PM on weekends. The facility is closed on Mondays.
While visiting Griffith Observatory and taking in the expansive views of the LA Basin, it is recommended that visitors also spend some time touring Griffith Park, one of the largest urban parks in America. Known as the Central Park of Los Angeles, Griffith Park offers miles of hiking trails and is also home to the Los Angeles Zoo.
